If we wait for governments, it will be too little, too late. If we act as individuals, it will be too little.

But if we act as communities, it might just be enough, just in time.

Kingston Transition is part of a worldwide movement of local communities responding to global changes that affect us all. We look at big-picture issues like climate change, reliance on fossil fuels, and economic disruption – and work on taking action locally. The Transition Movement is action oriented, but also concerned with deepening the dialog. We ask the tough questions, and try to think creatively about how we will navigate the future together.

Local Transition organizations can respond to challenges in ways that big institutions cannot. It is a grass roots model that harnesses local creative thinking and community energy to solve local problems, develop internally driven economic successes and promote sustainability and resilience while fostering community.

The Transition movement is based on four key assumptions:

  1. That life with dramatically lower energy consumption is inevitable, and that it’s better to plan for it than to be taken by surprise.
  2. That our settlements and communities presently lack the resilience to enable them weather the severe energy shocks that will accompany peak oil.
  3. That we have to act collectively, and we have to act now.
  4. That by unleashing the collective genius of those around us to creatively and proactively design our energy descent, we can build ways of living that are more connected, more enriching and that recognize the biological limits of our planet.
